What should I read next.

 What should I read next?

A couple of years ago, I started re-reading all of the Gor Novels. I started at number one, Tarnsman of Gor and proceeded from there. So much I had forgotten or not picked up on at the time.

I have just finished number Thirteen, Explorers of Gor.

So what should I read next. I had skipped number six, Raiders of Gor, and number eleven, Slavegirl of Gor.

I am looking for advice in the comments below. Should I go back and read Raiders or Slavegirl?

Should I proceed on to the Jason Marshall trilogy starting with number 14, Fighting Slave of Gor?

Should I skip the Marshall trilogy and jump on to number 17 Savages of Gor?

Advice please.

  1. That is a hard call my friend. When I first started reading the Gor series. I skipped around and didn't read them in order, mostly because either because of the cover art or when I was able to find them. Of the ones you listed, There are none that I would recommend not to. But I would say go with Raiders and then Captive. Both will fill in or explain things that happen later in the series. Captive sets the stage for Hunters and later Marauders. Enjoy

  2. The Fighting Slave of/ Rogue of/ Guardsman of Gor Trilogy is actually quite good and worth a read.

    1. Thank you, it has been decades since I read them.

    2. Actually, I agree. Some don't like this series, seeing Jason Marshal as a one dimensional character, but I thought Norman did a good job with this trilogy.

  3. I'd say, definitely, Raiders of Gor. It's the one Cabot acquires the name Bosk of Port Kar, and transforms from the earth attitudes of the earliest books into embracing Gor values fully - so, it's actually quite central to the series. He does get enslaved and humiliated for a bit, but this is only for a few chapters, before getting on top of things and getting his vengeance on the women who taunted him.

  4. Definitely go to Raiders next as Anonymous suggests, while pointing out it's the novel that sees Cabot acquiring the name Bosk and fully adopting Gorean values. Another good reason is that we are more fully introduced to the slaver Samos of Port Kar, who is one of the more fascinating characters in the Gorean universe. Also, the detail from Vallejo's superb Tarnsman of Gor cover that you provide in your post showed me something I'd never picked up before: Talena has very odd feet. But it is still my favourite Gor cover ever.

    1. My favorite cover will always be Vallego's Assassins of Gor cover. But then Elizabeth/vella was always my favorite of Cabot's slave companions. Talena was beautiful but had the temperament of she-sleen and she never seemed to stay in his collar where she belonged. But I agree that Raiders is a very key novel in the series and a must read.

    2. Yes, Paladin, Boris' Assassin of Gor cover is a master work too. I had forgotten that one. It has all the ingredients of Frazetta's Rogue Roman masterpiece.

    3. I agree with TroyDM and anonymous, Raiders is a key book, and very good! I read a handful of Gor books as a teenager (Jason Marshall ones among them) and then didn’t really get back into reading of Gor for decades, until I stumbled upon Emma’s extraordinary collection.

Since then, waiting in between her postings, I set out to read all the books, in sequential order. There are two that I didn’t care for, and they are essentially two parts of one long story about the barrens. The barrens is boring. Savages of Gor and Blood Brothers of Gor can easily be skipped and there would be no loss to the overall Cabot plot line.
I am currently on 32, Smugglers of Gor, a tie in to 29 and 30, with the Pani.
Six more to go to have read all 38. It would be nice to have Emma return and slow my progress for a bit…
